Start with the build surface, not the slicer

First-layer troubleshooting works best when you change one variable at a time. Begin with a cool build plate, wash the removable plate with dish soap and water when the plate manufacturer allows it, rinse thoroughly and avoid touching the print area. Skin oil can create isolated spots where filament refuses to stick.

Confirm that the plate type selected on the printer and in the slicer matches the plate installed. A smooth surface, textured surface and specialty plate can require different temperatures or preparation.

Check the nozzle and material path

A partially restricted nozzle can still extrude in the air but fail under first-layer pressure. Watch whether the line is steady, centered and continuous. Curling around the nozzle, thin intermittent lines or clicking from the extruder may indicate a restriction or feed problem rather than a bed-level issue.

Use a known, dry spool for testing. Moisture, inconsistent diameter or a tangled spool can make a calibration print misleading.

Separate leveling from Z offset

Bed leveling measures or adjusts the relationship between the nozzle and the print surface. Z offset controls the final nozzle distance for the first layer. A printer can report a successful mesh and still print too high or too low. Lines that remain round and separate usually indicate too much distance; a rough, transparent or scraped surface can indicate too little.

Make small changes and repeat the same simple test. Large adjustments made during a complex print make it harder to identify what actually improved the result.

Use a controlled slicer test

Return to the manufacturer profile for the printer, nozzle size and material. Confirm nozzle diameter, build plate, filament type and first-layer temperature. Disable experimental flow or speed changes until the baseline test succeeds.

  • Print a single-layer square or a simple first-layer pattern.
  • Use the same filament and plate for every comparison.
  • Record the Z-offset change instead of adjusting from memory.
  • Inspect the entire plate for a consistent result, not only the center.

When the problem is mechanical

If the nozzle distance changes across repeated tests, inspect for a loose build plate, debris beneath the plate, gantry play, a damaged probe mount, worn motion components or a loose hotend. A printer that cannot repeat its physical position will not be fixed by endlessly changing slicer values.
